Meanwhile, Hortense un comfortably goes from the lap of her grand-father at fourteen to letting herself be taken for rides in the sportscar and be otherwise pampered by a man whose only interest katberine in getting in her pants that he doesn’t is small consolation. Did I mention that all of this takes place in Paris and its environs?

Where has this Philippe — or any evidence of any of this — been for the entire novel? The story moves along at crocodikes good pace and while some moments are cringe worthy, I did enjoy the story.

I found myself laughing out loud, gasping with surprise, wanting to smack a few of these characters, feeling deeply sympathetic to Josephine and also deeply respecting her even when she seemed like her whole world of family and friends were walking all over her. Meaning that they have their own way about them – from fashion, to food, to beliefs on marriage and mistresses. That certainly doesn’t happen much any more! The real changes she undergoes are physical- she loses weight, gets highlights in her hair, ho hum- and yes, physical changes often correspond with an emotional rebirth, but telling your evil, wicked witch of a sister ‘no’ one time does not a true transformation make in my mind. Their plots all move at different paces bu Wow. And it’s set in Paris!! At times I loved the book, at others, I simply tolerated it.

If you’re easily offended by such things then don’t bother. Josephine who is a scholar and wallflower and lives in the shadow of her extravagant sister Iris. Lists with This Book. From the looks of it, ‘chopped’ is the proper word, too, and it would explain a lot crocodilse especially the gaps in some of the myriad storylines and the woefully underdeveloped characters and relationships.

And, of course, teenage occasional vixen Hortense wants to keep everything from her cellphone to her shockingly inappropriate boyfriend to the fancy clothes she gets on the sly secret from her mother.
